Driving two-wheelers give them self-confidence. They enjoy their newfound mobility.

Moniza, a first-year student of Patna Women’s College, said that owning a scooter helps her being independent while going to college or elsewhere.

She said: “My scooter gives me confidence to move around freely without being dependent on anyone.”

According to data from the district transport office (DTO), total number of permanent driving licences issued to women in 2011-2012 was 3,173 and the figure went up to 4,781 in 2012-2013. “Most girls are applying for licences to drive two-wheelers,” a source in the Patna DTO said.

Supriya Sinha, also a student of Patna Women’s College, said girls are more comfortable riding a two-wheeler than travelling by autorickshaws. “Autorickshaws are not always safe for a woman working till late hours or for students returning from coaching centres at 8-9pm,” she said.

Jamal Parvez, the owner of KPTVS, a showroom selling two-wheelers on Exhibition Road, is happy to see his business growing on a daily basis. “The rise in the number of women driving two-wheelers is a major reason for the surge in sales,” he said.

The father of a girl who went to buy a scooter at the store said: “It is far safer for my daughter to drive a two-wheeler than to travel by public transport. Girls have to move out of home to attend college, coaching classes and also for jobs. Using a scooter is a safe option.”

Medha Sharma, a 19-year-old college student, cited another reason for buying a two-wheeler. She said: “My scooter gives me the opportunity to explore the city or hang out with my friends without bothering about transport.”

She also mentions the “scooty gang”, which she is part of, called Peppy Pleasure. The group includes five more members who love riding their two-wheelers and enjoy hanging out together.

The mother of a college student had a different perspective. “Eve-teasing can be avoided if girls ride two-wheelers,” she said.
